Managers, We have a unique situation and I think I have an equitable solution, but I rarely unilaterally install new procedures without discussion. As they exist, the rules state: contracts must be assigned before managers can execute trades. The only reason this rule exists, is to ensure players will always go back into the draft pool the year after their final contract year is executed. The example being, I didn't want a trade of Bijan for Gibbs this year and the new owners put new 3 yr contracts on them. Or something similar to that. The intent is a player MUST go back to the draft pool after being contracted. However, the rule, as it is written also keeps players from putting contracts on players that did NOT previously have contracts on them if they execute a trade before contracts are due. The specific case that has arisen is a trade concerning Henry for Hubbard and Pickens. Hubbard and Pickens are going to Bootlegger, and Hall or Nothing is getting Henry. Bootlegger would like to contract Pickens after receiving him in trade. As commissioner I'm ok with that since it does not affect a contracted player going back into the draft pool. By the same token Drew would NOT be able to contract Derick Henry because he WAS on contract. It is also of note that this is past the contract deadline so I would have to allow this trade after the deadline (which I have done for many of you in the past as long as it doesn't affect players that have already played). So, unless there are any objections, I am going to rewrite the rule to allow for this sort of trade and contract behavior while still ensuring previously contracted players ALWAYS re-enter the draft pool (effective for this season).
